2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Poor Feedback

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a clearer vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news follows a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the full text from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a clearer identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its potential to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most well-known series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of the game in the months to follow.

The President

Background of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 together with a early access event. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, challenges, and obstacles that change every match. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as creation continues.
