Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
