Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
